GE 2020 Why It Should Matter To Me

Image
Contributed by WONG WAN LING Present Situation: General Election 2020 was held on 10 July. Prior to that, there was no platform for students to have a deeper understanding of the General Election. Improvement: In line with Youth Day 2020 and as part of National Education, the school invited Ms Kuik Shiao-Yin, Co-Founder & Director of The Thought Collective, to speak with the students on Monday, 6 July 2020 about General Election 2020 via an e-Conference titled “General Election 2020 – Why It Should Matter to Me. The one-hour session aimed to provide a platform to connect the students with what is happening in Singapore, to raise their awareness and to get them thinking about what GE means for them as youths and citizens of Singapore, and to learn/hear from someone who served as a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP). Approximately 120 students and 20 staff attended the e-Conference. Feedback from the students was positive and students described the experience as interesting, enligh

Teachers' Day eConcert 2020

Image
Contributed by WONG WAN LING Present Situation: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not hold the annual Teachers' Day Celebration at the school hall. Improvement: We took the celebration online by inviting students to submit video performances (singing and dancing), and also invited teachers who were awarded the TONY (Teachers of Nanyang) Awards to share photos/videos of their interpretation of the awards. All the photos and videos were stitched together to create NYGH's first-ever Teachers' Day eConcert which was screened online via YouTube and viewed by students and colleagues in the classrooms on 3 September. Other members involved in this project are: 1. Student Leaders from BOM and NYSC 2. Wong Wan Ling

National Day Observance Ceremony 2020

Image
Contributed by WONG WAN LING Present Situation: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not hold the annual National Day Observance Ceremony at the quadrangle like what had been done in previous years as mass gatherings were still not possible. Improvement: An initial idea was to arrange for the parade (marching in of the National Flag and School Flag, flag-raising ceremony and recitation of the pledge) to be carried out by a small group of Uniformed Group members and live fed from the quadrangle to all the classrooms via video streaming. After further discussion, it was decided that the entire parade segment will be pre-recorded and then screened via YouTube on the day of the school celebration on Friday, 7 August. The planning and execution of the entire segment was carried out by the following groups of people: 1. Teachers from the 3 Uniformed Groups, 2. National Education Team, 3. Mark Shone, the AV Students and Michael Chang, and Mrs Chek provided us with guidance.

Faulty Lock Mechanism at Toilet C1-T2 and Toilet C2-T6

Contributed by NG CHENG TEE Present Situation: At least two toilets for handicapped/men have faulty lock mechanism for many years. The lock level will engage itself, if the door is slammed to close with a bang. This situation happens when one leaves the toilet causing it to lock from inside. As a result, this toilet is not accessible to other users. Reports was made previously and minor repair work was carried out without much success. For more than ten years, the problem is still there. Reasons for present status might due to whatever excuses, but the problem needs to be fixed. Improvement: Replace the whole lock assembly and the toilets could be fully operational again.

ICT, Data and Computer Science Curriculum

Image
Contributed by GOH HAN PIN Present Situation: Students did not have sufficient preparation in ICT, Data and Computer Science to be future-ready and world-ready. Improvement: Initiated a 4-year curriculum framework which is endorsed by EXCO and to be implemented from Jan 2021 onwards.

Teaching Sec 1 students certain skills

Contributed by SAM CHOON JUEN Present Situation: There is a curriculum for CCE and agenda for some CCT, but I feel that the lower sec girls need more guidance and structure in various aspects of their secondary school life e.g. certain organisational skills... Improvement: To include the following into the CCT agenda in the beginning of the year. E.g. teaching the girls how to organise their emails (inbox, folders, etc.) so that they are not overwhelmed by the number of emails they receive. Another example is on using an organiser to note down their homework, deadlines, things to bring, etc. I think we may have assumed that they already know.

Prevent power trip for laundry room

Image
Contributed by JOHN TNG MEE LENG Present Situation: 1.) Problems: Blk B & Blk C of Boarding School each has 5 washing machines & 5 dryer machines at its Laundry Room, or a total 20 machines for boarders to DIY. Previously, whenever there was power trip caused by electrical problem of one machine, the remaining 9 machines would have no power supply. Users of other machines would need to wait until the main circuit breaker was reset. Improvement: 2.) My idea: Removed existing “20 Amp single pole AC isolator switch” for individual machine & replaced with “power breaker 13 Amp single gang RCD socket”. When one of the machines has electrical problem and causes power trip, it will affect only the machine. Power supply to the other machines will not be affected. This means that users of other machines will not be affected at all.

More Effective Notice of O Level Exam

Contributed by Mrs CHEK LAM ENG Present Situation: This year, the class 412 is having their O level exam in SPR 1- 8, where the human traffic is very heavy- with students headed to Back Box for DramaFest preparations and with other ongoing Post Exam Activities. Improvement: Besides the morning announcements of the day's papers and timing, physical notices will provide instant visual reminders. Have arranged for 1 flip chart to be placed at GO Lobby and the other just outside SPR. The PEs have been using them to put up the daily exam notices.

NYGHOutrunsCOVID (Virtual workout challenge) Result Analysis

Image
Contributed by ONG POH CHOO Present Situation: NYGHoutrunsCOVID data collated thru SG Form, the result analysis was completed using excel and design infographic using Canva and Tableau. Improvement: If this result analysis is processed by a vendor, the school will need to pay for it.

Tracking and Monitoring Students' Daily Present Rate using Power BI

Image
Contributed by ONG POH CHOO Present Situation: Do not have a line chart to show all students' daily present rate by levels. Improvement: Students' daily present rate by levels line chart generated using Power BI and sent it to management. With COVID-19, taking daily attendance and monitoring absenteeism is essential.

Digitalisation of DSA e-interview templates

Image
Contributed by ONG POH CHOO Present Situation: Hard copy DSA Interview Form, print and handwriting. Improvement: e-Form was created, typewriting and save as a soft copy file. Saved the cost of printing, reduced storage space, better collaboration, increased efficiency & file management.

Step-by-step guide to filling in finance forms

Image
Contributed by ELIZABETH NICOLE CUTTER Present Situation: Currently, we can find many finance forms available online on the new Accounts Portal. However, there are no instructions as to how to fill it out. Teachers new to the admin processes will have to ask others verbally for help. Improvement: Can we host step-by-step guides on how to fill in such forms and the processes involved on the Accounts Portal as well? E.g. what the different fields on the forms refer to, the need to attach original invoice, stamp it, get it signed, what dates we must take into account, where to place the form, etc. It will be a handy reference for all teachers, whether new to the process, or those who have not filled in such forms for a long time.

Using Staff Planning Seminar for PDLP Conversations

Image
Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: Engagement of staff was needed to consider their perspectives on the Personalised Digital Learning Programme. Improvement: The first day of the Staff Planning Seminar was used for this. Members of the EdTech Committee facilitated discussions on Professional Learning, Learning Environment and device choice, and the input was used to make decisions on the school's Tech Plan for the PDLP.

Turning the EdTech website into a HBL Resource Microsite for teachers

Image
Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: Teachers did not have a curated resource page where they could find out more about tips and tricks when it came to using online tools for remote teaching. Improvement: The former EdTech website was pivoted to become a one-stop resource site for teachers to refer to for ideas, tips and troubleshooting for their remote teaching practices.

HBL Checklist

Image
Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: As the runway for the very first run of HBL was short, students and teachers might not know how to prepare themselves for home learning. Improvement: A checklist which is put up on the HBL portal helps students assess their level of readiness. The day before HBL started, Form Teachers also went through the checklist with their form classes.

Student Helpdesk for HBL and Blended Learning

Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: Students have queries on how to use tools for learning, especially for HBL and Blended Learning. Improvement: By setting up an online helpdesk consisting of Sec 1, 2 and 3 Tech Ambassadors, students may channel their queries to them. In turn, student Tech Ambassadors are able to assist their peers and also increase their experience, knowledge and leadership ability.

Use of Originality Report instead of Turnitin

Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: Turnitin, a program for checking of plagiarism, requires a school licence which costs upwards of $11000 a year. However, its usage is very little. For example, this year, the English Department used it only once, and only with the Sec 4 level. Improvement: An alternative is Originality Report, which is built into Google Classroom and is hence already available. This retains most of the needed features for the purpose of plagiarism checking.

Teacher Helpdesk for HBL and Blended Learning

Contributed by MUHAMMAD IMRAN BIN HASSAN Present Situation: Teachers are not used to remote teaching and learning and have queries regarding tools used. Improvement: Set up an online helpdesk where members of the EdTech Committee are present online to assist teachers with their queries.

PD Needs Form for Mentoring

Contributed by LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present Situation: Presently, we feel the need to have closer coordination in mentoring in the following areas: 1) Communication from Acad Heads to PD team on the mentoring needs of an officer 2) Ways to record salient points during mentoring sessions that led to comprehensive review of the process after the lesson observation 3) Common documentation for Acad Heads, Mentors, and Mentees for conversation. Improvement: With all these needs in mind, the LT and SSD discussed to come up with a PD need forms and establish the following flow to be implemented at the end of 2020 for mentoring in 2021. The PD needs forms take reference from KRAs so that it aligns with EO performance review process and has been customised according to the different substantive grades (eg. GEO4 form is slightly different from GEO5 forms as the expectation for each KRA is spelled out differently). We would require the Acad Heads to fill up the PD needs form when they identify

Kindness Video

Contributed by HUI CAREN Present Situation: Due to the Covid situation, the cleaners and security guards and the infrastructure team have to work much harder to make our studying environment safer and more conducive to learning in this new normal. Improvement: The Sec 2 ABOM2s have thought about how we, as a school, should be educated on how to show them kindness and make their jobs easier. They spent time during the CB period doing up the video from conceptualising, doing up the animation, voiceover and final editing.

CBCI Department Conversations during PD

Image
Contributed by LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present Situation: CBCI has been one of the PD areas of focus for EO since 2017. After embarking 3-year of having Jennifer Wathall to train all teachers in CBCI in 2017 - 2019, this is the first year when we moved into in-house development of CBCI. This requires Dept to have consolidated approach to plan the units and implement the strategies in the classrooms. On 2 April, Luis and Sharon sat in the Acad Heads meeting and we learned that the Dept needs the time to reflect on the current approach to CBCI, have a closer look into the characteristics of CBCI lessons that have been shared by the curriculum specialists, and align the approach to the change of curriculum such as new syllabus, blended learning, etc. Improvement: With all these considerations in mind, we conceptualised a series of Department conversations during school-wide PD time, to give every Department time and space for them to learn about CBCI characteristics, reflect of the current

Rest Programme in NYGH

Image
Contributed by LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present Situation: When the school reopened in June 2020 after Circuit Breaker, we foresee that there will be adjustment needed for staff during the reopening and adapt progressively to the new normal. In terms of Staff Wellbeing programme, we knew that we could not do physical meet up for Zumba, having Staff Family Day, and other bonding activities. Hence, we need to explore another way to support staff wellbeing especially in the area of emotions and social. Improvement: We explored to co-design a rest programme for our staff with Ms Yap Youmin from Xiu Nature Connection. Ms Yap has earlier shared with Luis on various customised wellbeing programme that she co-designed with other schools and organisations and we were keen to explore that. The rest programme took a principle from Yoga Nidra which gave a way to relax body and mind that would lead to increased productivity and healthier state of the mind. We invited Ms Yap to share about her work an

Infusion of Personal Learning Session into PD Plan

Image
Contributed by LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present Situation: In 2019, noting the need for teachers to have personal PD space, we have given all teachers 10 hours of reading time that are counted in their PD hours. Noting that teachers might also need the time to pursue other activities besides reading, we found there is a need to give teachers some Personal Learning Session in the PD plan, so that they could use it for reading, having conversation with colleagues, or learning staff of their interest. Improvement: In March 2020, we tried out 1 personal learning session on Friday morning to be given to the staff. We noted there were quite a wide range of activities. Some teachers used it to catch up on their readings, the LT (Sharon) used this chance to offer a small group conversation on Differentiated Instruction, so that teachers who have not attended such sessions or need refresher had a meaningful learning time. Another group of staff also attended a sharing by our Community Partner, on

Teachers' Day Fundraiser

Image
Contributed by KUNALAN GINA Present Situation: Students spend a lot of money on Teachers' Day gifts and teachers often receive an abundance of gifts which they don't need. Gift exchange is also not in keeping with COVID rules which requires us to have less contact with each other. Improvement: I suggested to my CCA group who was working on the 'Save That Pen' initiative that we use Teachers' Day as a way to raise funds to buy pen refills that we need for the initiative. Teachers indicated whether they preferred students to pledge their "gift money" to help raise funds and students were informed of this. A total of 45 teachers signed up and a total of $375.60 was raised. The number of gift exchanges was also drastically reduced.

Google Classroom for eCCA

Image
Contributed by TEO HUI LIN LENA Present Situation: Due to the COVID-19, schools were closed and HBL was instituted. As a result, the face-to-face CCA sessions stopped. To continue to gather and provide information and learning opportunities and fun for the students in Infocomm Club, a on-line plafform i.e. Google Classroom was created. Improvement: A Google Classroom for the Infocomm Club was created to curate and provide a home base for the club members to easily stay in touch and to conduct activities that would be fun and enriching for the club members. This platform served well for even a e-election of EXCO when this could not be done face-to -face. Candidates for the EXCO had to campaign online with videos of campaign speeches and personal commitment. This enabled the club members to get to know about the candidates. We also held a online election debate and Q & A with all the Club members before our online voting. So this platform had been a great help! It is still a very act

Save That Pen

Image
Contributed by KUNALAN GINA Present Situation: Students and teachers throw away many pens throughout the year. The school has no program to recycle pens to reduce plastic waste. A group of students from the Nature Society and I decided to look for a way to address this. Improvement: This initiative has 2 aspects - service learning and environmental concern. By collecting pens and refilling them to give to Children's Wishing Well, it is a form of service to the community. By recycling pens that cannot be refilled, it helps to reduce plastic waste.

Checking of Exam Scripts

Contributed by TAN GEK HOON Present Situation: Scripts were return to whole cohorts of students at big venues e.g Hall, Auditorium, LT, Conference Rooms B and C. However this year, with SMM in place, it was not possible to conduct the returning of scripts with the students in the level gathering at one venue. Improvement: A schedule was drafted for teachers to go into each class to return the exam scripts. For better communication, subject teachers were rostered to go into each class. Students are also more at ease with teachers they know and are familiar with. This is made possible with the use of the Timetable software to generate a 3 day timetable for use for returning of exam scripts. For better control of time, and for consistency of communication to students across different classes, teachers pre-record what they want to say. Subject teachers will then play the videos when they go in to the classes. This allows for all students to hear the same matters being discussed, at differe

Math Revision Booklet

Image
Contributed by TAN GEK HOON Present Situation: The math revision booklets are inhouse materials, printed by a photocopier vendor. Students will separately pay for this at the start of the year, and received it some time in January. With the printers being outsourced, the school has covered this cost of printing. The books are not prepared earlier, and being printed by the printers from Popular. They can then be sold together with all the other textboks and materials. Students and parents will be able to purchase all their books at one go. Improvement: Students and parents are able to purchase their books all a one go together with the other textbooks. There is no need to separately print and distribute the books.

Digital showcase of highlights of students’ music creations

Image
Contributed by THEODORA HUANG XINYI Present Situation: No existing platform to showcase students’ musical achievements. Improvement: Web presentation of Google Slides for NYGH community to navigate through an online showcase of audio/video samples of students’ work, curated from lower sec Music lessons, HMP, and other external music platforms supported by the Music unit.

Remaking Staff Passes

Image
Contributed by Mrs Chek Lam Eng Present Situation: Many of the staff passes have faded, some with photos completely washed out They were made in-house back in 2017. Improvement: Redesign a new staff pass and hopefully with improved technology for better quality printing, they will keep well for a longer period.

Web URL

Image
Contributed by TEO XIONG KAI Present Situation: Using long web address that cant tell public that is belong to NYGH. example: https://sites.google.com/nygh.edu.sg/testing/home Improvement: 1) NYGH portal have a feature to shorten the url with a unique link: example: testing.nygh.edu.sg 2) first impression to public that this is from NYGH and not a scam.

Blended Learning in PE

Image
Contributed by LIM TING FANG Present Situation: With the Covid situation, there was a call for blended learning for all subjects. There was a need to respond quickly as well due to the unpredictable developments in the Covid situation. Improvement: In our subject matter of Physical Education, having to rethink how our curriculum could still be delivered in the confines of our students' home "forced" us to think out of the box and seek out sharing of best practices via virtual conferences and online platforms. Aside from the theory part of our sports to be delivered during HBL, the students were also engaged in physical activities at home through a myriad of lessons that involved chair exercises, physical challenges, video analyses, designing of own workout via the FITT principle. Our objectives were multi-pronged - to be able to infuse blended learning in PE by complementing our physical lessons with theory lessons (i.e. psychomotor meets cognitive) as well as to inculcat

SMM in PE

Image
Contributed by LIM TING FANG Present Situation: Having to adhere to SMM in PE, the Department had to rethink space configuration, sanitation procedures and curriculum delivery for PE in NYGH. Improvement: To strike a balance between maintaining SMM as well as keeping the students engaged, PE lessons were redesigned with purposeful space demarcation, structured wipe down procedures and deconstructing PE activities so that students could still keep themselves active within safe parameters of learning and Covid measures. Indoor spaces were marked out into grids for the students to move around in. The grids were designed such that it could be used across most sports in the PE curriculum. In addition, a new spin was put into the usual lessons (e.g. Floorball became human foosball lessons). Net barrier games lent themselves well to the SMM situation. When the Covid SMM were relaxed to include more numbers (i.e. 5), the spaces and games were again reconfigured to allow for that to happen.

Peer Evaluation for e-CCA Sessions

Image
Contributed by LEE XIN YING Present Situation: Lack of interaction, having to keep apart even during CCA session. Improvement: COVID-19 has allowed us to think of new ways in which peers, juniors-seniors can also learn from one another via online platform. For this particular session, dancers had to record themselves for a dance conditioning exercise. After which, they were each allocated a peer's video to watch and leave their comments on padlet. The girls had to take specific screenshots and annotate what was good and what wasn't. This was nice as they could learn from one another at their own pace. This was also good as during the actual eCCA, our instructor was able to facilitate the sessions easily using the girls' responses.

Hard Copy Exam Timetable

Image
Contributed by Mrs Chek Lam Eng Present Situation: The soft copy of Exam Timetable is sent to all staff and students. Students also get a printed copy. The colour-coded timetables are also displayed on the noticeboard outside the GO. Improvement: Some of us really need to refer to the exam timetable every day and many need the timetable of all 4 levels - for side gate opening and traffic management, checking on student numbers during recess and their timing, arrangement for urgent meetings with students and staff, etc Since copies are printed for students, please print extrra for teachers' collection, instead of each of us printing our own. The colour coding is also useful. For exam comm's consideration. Will be much appreciated.

Stopwatch

Image
Contributed by CHONG YEOK MEE ROSALIND Present Situation: Stopwatches in Biology labs frequently come in contact with salt solutions or water when used. Many were malfunctioned. Improvement: These stopwatches are dismantled for cleaning or drying. Contact points are sandpapered, as they are oxidised, to ensure good electric connection. In this way, it prolongs the lifespan of stopwatches and save costs.

Better use

Image
Contributed by CHONG YEOK MEE ROSALIND Present Situation: When school reopens after circuit breaker, Biology labs need to provide students with disinfectant and soap solution. Improvement: To save costs, unused spray bottles and plastic bottles were washed and labelled to fill them up with disinfectant and soap solutions.

Better Deployment of Gifted Hand Sanitizers

Image
Contributed by Mrs Chek LAM ENG Present Situation: Through MOE, the school was given 1600 pocket size and 1600 jumbo sized hand sanitizers intended for distribution to each student. Mindful that many students may not need the jumbo bottles and being alcohol-based and flammable, they are fire hazards if stored in their classrooms. Improvement: This notice was given to each class: Gift of Hand Sanitisers to Students MOE is giving to each student a 50ml pocket-sized hand sanitiser (HS) and a 500ml pump bottle of HS. The school is distributing to each student one pocket-sized HS but we are mindful that some students may not want to bring the 500ml bottle home to refill it when it runs out. Our proposal is to issue each class with 2 X 500ml bottles for daily shared use. When the bottles are used up, the class monitor should bring the empty bottles to the General Office to exchange for new ones. The empty bottles will be recycled. The school will place the excess HS on every table in canteen

List of suggested online arts experiences

Contributed by THEODORA HUANG XINYI Present Situation: Full Home-Based Learning during Circuit Breaker. Improvement: Collation of websites/organisations offering complimentary digital arts experiences for students and staff in a shared online document, updated on a weekly basis during circuit breaker period.

Performing Arts virtual ensemble (BEL)

Image
Contributed by THEODORA HUANG XINYI Present Situation: Suspension of CCA due to COVID-19. Improvement: Performing Arts CCAs can explore virtual modes of performance (i.e. recording themselves individually and stitching the parts together in video post-production). An opportunity for Performing Arts BELs to conceptualise and coordinate an inter-CCA project to bring the arts to the school community during this season.

HMP Class Performance performance radar diagrams

Contributed by THEODORA HUANG XINYI Present Situation: During class performance, HMP students provide peer feedback verbally. Improvement: Students can also provide quantitative and qualitative feedback based on given assessment criteria, and captured through Google Forms, of which the visualization of the data analytics can be presented in the form of radar diagrams to provide each performer with clearer feedback on the specific aspects of the performance they should further develop.

Music CCA Mixed Ensemble

Image
Contributed by THEODORA HUANG XINYI Present Situation: Few opportunities for students to collaborate and create across performing arts CCAs; students in Music CCAs are strong in performing skills but have less exposure to creating and improvisatory processes, which are key to the holistic development of musicianship. Improvement: A series of music improvisation workshops facilitated by in-house music teacher, bringing together members of Chinese Orchestra, Concert Band, Choir and String Ensemble in a mixed ensemble setting. 5 sessions held fortnightly during common CCA timeslot, culminating in co-created original performance pieces to be showcased in the Performing Arts CCA concerts 2020. (suspended after 4 sessions due to suspension of CCA in T2).

Leave and Course Status for Staff

Image
Contributed by TEO XIONG KAI Present Situation: HR to update the staff who are on leave/course at whiteboard. Staff will need to go over to check who are on leave or on course. Improvement: Update in google sheet and show in intranet. HR can save the earth cos no more marker needed.

SIA-Extended Classroom Programme: E-Conference with Johnson & Johnson

Image
Contributed by MOLYYATI BINTE SHAHWAN Present Situation: Due to SMM & Covid-19, students from ECP SIA did not have their 1 week work-attachment during the June holidays at Tunglok restaurant and Far East Flora. Improvement: We invited a group of leaders in Johnson & Johnson, namely Mr Chris Ewer (Vice-President Supply Chain), Ms Jocelyn Austria (Senior Director for Technology), Ms Karen Lee (Senior Strategic Account Director) and Ms Danielle Goh (Strategy and Deployment Data Analyst) to have an online sharing with our students on Zoom. It was a good opportunity for our students to find out from the panel on what challenges the company faced during Covid19 and how they overcome these challenges. The students also have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the panel during the session. At the end of the session, the students submitted their reflection/take-aways from the sharing with the teachers.

Donation of Masks for Those Who Need Them More by Sec 3 BOMs

Image
Contributed by HUI CAREN Present Situation: There were 2 masks given to each girl, sponsored by a parent. There was feedback that the girls had too many masks. The Sec 3 BOMs volunteered to undertake the project, wrote to the student body for donations, took turns to consolidate the donations, liaised with the organisations and made sure the masks were delivered. Improvement: The sec 3 BOMs showed good teamwork, understood what it meant by giving, and experienced how a donation drive of this scale worked.

Historical Literacy Maps

Image
Contributed by TEO HUI LIN LENA Present Situation: There is no one standardised and comprehensive set of Historical literacy map that would guide both teacehrs in students in the development of historical thinking and application. This results in inconsistency in teaching and learning over the years. Improvement: Develop a standardised set of Historical Literacy Maps that will guide both teachers and students in the development of historical thinking and application. This will ensure consistency and effectiveness in the teaching and learning of History in NYGH across all classes and levels.

Setting up of a French book section in YZ Library

Image
Contributed by LEE SIEW HON CALVIN Present Situation: There are no French books in the library, and many of our students do take French as a thrid langauge. Part of acquiring a language is the act of reading. Improvement: As I have been studying French for the last 5 years, I have collected many French books of varying difficulties. Many of these books are in very good condition because I have only read them once. Some of these books, I have bought from my trips to Paris. I have approached Wen Di about the possibility of starting a French section in the library so that the students can benefit from reading such materials. I will be donating many of these books to our library. These books range from basic readers to novels. This will aid the third language in their pursuit for the French language and culture. As to when this coulld happen, perhaps at the end of this year.

Replacement for Questia School Research Webiste

Image
Contributed by LEE SIEW HON CALVIN Present Situation: For the Literature Critical Essay, we have always paid for inidivual Questia accounts. We would purchase them for students and teachers, with the help of the librarians. But we were informed last year that Questia Schools is not available anymore. Improvement: We approached Wen Di for a solution and he suggested that we could use J-Stor which can be found in the NLB Database, and it is free. So, Wen Di came up with instructions for students to get their parents to register their accounts to get access to the NLB Database, so they will have J-Stor. Wen Di is very much part of this team but I could only add two names, which are the other two Sec 4 Literature teachers. I am not sure about the cost of Questia, as I research on the website and it is about 100 USD per account. Now, we can get academic journals for free.

Online Exhibition for SPICE Programme

Contributed by KONG WENG HO BENJAMIN Present Situation: The SPICE Programme has an exhibition every year, to showcase student work in their ComEd journey as well as their Interdisciplinary projects. However, with the pandemic this year, it is not possible to hold the usual exhibition due to the restrictions on mass gatherings. Improvement:  We will conduct the exhibition on an online platform that allows the students' work to be showcased. The platform will have the option for video so that the students can present their work to their audience. The platform should also provide a chance for visitors to give feedback. This was implemented using the Artsteps platform for the whole Sec 2 cohort, and the exhibition was e-launched on 25 August 2020. The Artsteps platform was chosen as it is a free platform. Subsequently, we might consider switching to a paid platform (estimated cost $1000/mth, only for the duration of the exhibition) that is easier to use and has more features to showcas

Examination Instructions to Invigilators

Image
Contributed by KONG WENG HO BENJAMIN Present Situation: Setters of Exam papers write instructions for invigilators on a yellow form that includes other details such as the name of the paper, class, enrolment, etc. One of the current instructions is a standard instruction that applies across all papers (collect the question papers at the end of the paper). Improvement: To print the instruction onto the yellow forms directly, instead of having every setter write it out 12 or 13 times (once for each class). This would not use any additional paper, and would save all the paper setters the time and effort to write out this standard instruction.

Sec 2 Geography Virtual Fieldwork Experiences during HBL

Recycling of Blue/Yellow Ribbons

Image
Contributed by Mrs Chek-Lim Lam Eng Present Situation: Each staff was given a pair of blue/yellow ribbons for Founder'd Day celebration. However many did not use them and they would otherwise be put aside. Improvement: To request staff to return the unused ribbons which can be given to the Student Leaders for use at cheering events eg at national school games. Within a week, as on 28 Aug, 80 pairs of ribbons have been collected and the closing date is 31 Aug. The cost savings is worked out based on $1 per pair of ribbons. Also suggest in future, staff collect items of this nature on a needs/want basis, instead of giving out to everyone, unlike the meal coupons.

Ensure that the stall holder enter their own counting and have the FD committee teacher countersign after verifiying the number of coupons. Serves as a record and makes it easy to raise invoice and payment from accounts. Speeds up the processing time.

The students have produced commendable pieces of artwork that have caught the attention of the Zaobao Student Publication (under zbCOMMA which is an independent Chinese news-magazine distributed to schools on alternate Wednesday and hopes to develop young readers to Lianhe Zaobao reading when the students are older). The article, which features a few home-based learning sharing by a few schools, is published in zbCOMMA. The students hav
