Science Lesson sharing by visitor on Zoom

Image
Contributed by  ANG JOO LIAK Present situation: Due to current SMM measures in schools, visitors to meet students for sharing are not allowed. Improvement: Alternative is to invite visitor(s) to share with a class via online meeting platform. I invited a Physics teacher Mr Michael Ho (Bukit View Secondary School) to conduct a Zoom session for each of my sec 1 class 102 and 103 on 19 Aug 2020 to share his experience at the Mars Desert Research Station in USA in Nov/Dec 2019. Students were given background information of current interest at http://s1science.pbworks.com/w/page/141012411/mars_teacher about recent launch of space probes to explore Mars. Students posted questions on padlets and Mr Ho responded to their questions. Photos and student reflections were also posted on the padlets.

Image
Contributed by  TEO HUI LIN LENA, MACKINTOSH JOHN LACHLAN, SNG JU-LIN Present situation: Teacher directed teaching and students tend to be passive receivers with minimal group discussion. Unit is rather complex and many different components of information due to complexity of the situation and challenges presented. Improvement: This game is designed to allow students to study the situation that existed in Singapore in the 1960s and to understand the challenges facing Singapore as a newly independent and sovereign country on 9 August 1965. Students will be asked to think what the leaders and people in Singapore should do given the situation at that time. This game includes a role-play element that requires students to put themselves in the shoes of the people at that time and to think of possible solutions which might include maintaining status quo or changing things to ensure development and survival. This game will also provide students with a chance to immerse themselves in that peri

PD with Community Partners in Residence

Image
Contributed by  LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present situation: One area of PD is on how teachers could learn about the change of trend in real-world context, especially in the application of their subject disciplinarity, and bring this exposure to the students through their interaction with them in the classroom in order to prepare our students to be future ready. For example, to ignite students' interest who are passionate in the area of technology, teachers need to connect with experts out there (eg researchers or engineers) and bring about their expertise to students. However, the opportunity to connect with the experts out there were quite limited as teachers need to source for network to do it. With NYGH embarking on Community Partners in Residence since November 2019, the opportunity to connect with our partners in various areas beginning to open up. Improvement: After the attempt to establish the network of community partners in residence in the first term of 2020, the network of

Student-Led CCE Lesson

Image
Contributed by  LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE Present situation: In general, CCE lessons are designed by the CCE Committee for the Form Teachers to adapt according to their own class' needs. This flow in itself is already good as it gives the Form Teachers the clear objective of the lesson and the recommended flow, strategies and resources to support the lesson, which become the base for the form teachers to customise it further. While this model has empowered the teachers to take ownership of the CCE lessons, I feel there are opportunities for the teachers to tap on the empowerment of their students as eventually the character education is about the students. By playing active roles in co-designing CCE lessons with the teacher, the students would also develop themselves in characters and values at different levels of skills and maturity. They will facilitate them to "live" the values at the practical level. Improvement: I am teaching Sec 4 this year, so I have been working with

Streamlining IdEa evaluation and follow-up work-flow

Image
Contributed by Wen Di, Benjamin Kong, LIU SHIUEH LING Present situation: We had IdEa evaluation meeting on every one or two months. Evaluation panel member discussed and grade ideas accordingly. For the ideas could not be rated immediately, Wen Di or any evaluation panel member will follow up. Usually Wen Di will take note and record the comments accordingly. Improvement: Initiated by Dr Liu, now we tried some new methods and streamline the work process. For each evaluation, Wen Di generates the IdEa report and share in Google drive for evaluation panel to access. We still use the existing online report, but now we directly record the key points of discussion on the file, and we decide immediately after each idea discussion what grade to give, who should be the one to follow up, and which comm/team should we approach. With clearer instruction and communication, we would be able to follow up in a more effective way. And once we received the response or updates from relevant parties, eac

Monitoring School building Month to Month Electrical (Kwh) & Water (Cubic Meter) Usage Consumption

Image
Contributed by  ANG PECK HAI Present situation: The infra team task is just to record now the School building month end Electrical & Water Usage Consumption, after finish record the usage consumption, we will tabulate out the actual figure and then hand over the document detail to finance for billing process, the present situation is we do not have the actual usage consumption data for Month to Month the Electrical & Water was consume, so is very difficult to identify the roof cause if there is the major increase or decrease for the usage. Improvement: The implemented solution is to create the MS Excel file , so we will copy now the Month to Month Electrical (Kwh) & Water (Cubic Meter) Usage Consumption , after the data is tabulate and insert it , the formula will perform the task to calculate the actual usage that consume during the month. So if there is a major increase or decrease related to the usage, the root cause will be much easier to identify.

Student-Led Centering Exercise every Wed morning

Image
Contributed by  LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE, SABRINA BTE EMIL, TAN LIANG PING JAMES Present situation: In Semester 1, the school has embarked on school-wide centering exercise every Friday morning. The intent was to give students the experience to take a break and ground themselves for a few minutes and get them to get ready for the day. In the long run, it is hoped that this habit will be cultivated in all school members (students and staff) and equip them with ways to re-energise ourselves. For the whole of Semester 1, the regular programme was led by teachers in the Disciplined Community. While we were encouraged by this good start, the team felt that the next step is to involve students who have been practising the exercise to lead the school in the session. That would give the whole community of the sense of pervasiveness and relevance by having students themselves to lead the rest. Improvement: Acting on to the above suggestion, Luis approached some students from his classes as they

Tracking of Key Trainings through HRIS Portal

Image
Contributed by  LUIS TIRTASANJAYA LIOE, NG CHUEN-YIN, LIU SHIUEH LING Present situation: Over the years, staff key trainings were recorded in TRAISI and the respective owners had to create a separate list to do the tracking. While TRAISI allowed automatic report generation, it could not be differentiated from the other regular training records and hence the information was not ready at hand when we need it. Examples of key training are teachers' GE training, sexuality education, CBCI, PosEd, key conferences such as SAGE, and certain awards such as ADE. Hence, we need a system that could capture the key training and allow the tracking over the years in a systematic and easy to retrieved manner. Improvement: With the above intention in mind, the idea of putting key training in HRIS was brought up by the management. Dr Liu and Luis followed it up by checking with our HRIS vendor and we came up with the feature of key trainings recording and generating the list/report. In May 2020, the

The collection of photos was presented as a collage (on Google Classroom) at the end of the semester to showcase the good work that the students have done. Improvement: Students apply what they have learnt in school at home and it builds up their confidence.
