Present situation:
One area of PD is on how teachers could learn about the change of trend in real-world context, especially in the application of their subject disciplinarity, and bring this exposure to the students through their interaction with them in the classroom in order to prepare our students to be future ready. For example, to ignite students' interest who are passionate in the area of technology, teachers need to connect with experts out there (eg researchers or engineers) and bring about their expertise to students. However, the opportunity to connect with the experts out there were quite limited as teachers need to source for network to do it. With NYGH embarking on Community Partners in Residence since November 2019, the opportunity to connect with our partners in various areas beginning to open up.
Improvement:
After the attempt to establish the network of community partners in residence in the first term of 2020, the network of partners started to grow and it is about time to explore closer collaboration with our teachers so that teachers can work alongside with them in developing students in the real world application. The SSD then explored the possibility to have interest-based conversation with community partners and planned the session to happen on 5 June 2020. We managed to get several partners who were interested to share their work with the teachers that have potential to open up for collaboration. The teachers were then invited to join a session based on their interest, so that the conversation that took place will be focused and the potential for future collaboration that impacted our students could be explored. The sessions were successfully run and we had positive feedback from the teachers. At least, there were 3 follow-up collaboration from the interaction with the community partners that impacted on students' learning: 1) With GovTech who developed emotion-based tools to help with the CCE lessons - the CCE committee has been in touch with the team to explore how we can pilot the tools with some of our students to see the potential benefit. 2) With Women in Tech, Mr Ang Joo Liak explored the collaboration with them further to give talk to Sec 3 Physics students so that they could see the real world connection of Science and technological world. The students found it encouraging given that the speakers are women (NYGH alumna) who have insightful experience on the roles of women in technology. 3) Math and Science Festivals in July, again the committee collaborated with Women in Tech and this time around we had 3 speakers who were all NYGH alumna having a broad spectrum of technology area: software engineer in Microsoft, coding in music, and technology management. In future, such collaboration are expected to blossom that will enhance the education programme, especially in bridging the subject area with real world connection. Furthermore, with this partnership, there will be cost savings as well that normally incurred when we have to invite speakers from the Industry.
