Current Situation:
As part of the PE syllabus, Sec 1 students learn Track and Field events such as Sprints, Javelin, Shot Put and High Jump. In the past, students get to take part in Combined Sports Meet (CSM) where some of them have the opportunity to take part in the Track and Field events in a competitive setting. However, not all students have the opportunity to compete during CSM. Due to the pandemic, CSM did not take place last year. As a result, last year’s Sec 1 students did not have the opportunity to take part in any Track & Field events competitively.
Improvement:
To create a platform for students to compete in the Track & Field events which they learnt during PE in Term 1 and 2, we decided to carry out an “in-class” Track & Field ICG in April. There were 6 events (50m, 400m, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Shot Put) and each student have the opportunity to take part in 2 Track & Field events of their choice (the 2 events need to be from different category). Instead of only rewarding the top 3 runners/throwers, we prepared prizes for the top 10 for each event as a form of motivation for the students. In order to adhere to SMM guidelines, the events were carried out during their respective PE lessons. The non-participants for each event helped out as event officials and as a result have a better understanding of the various Track & Field events and rules.
