1. What was the current need/gap that you were addressing? The initiative addresses the need to broaden students’ exposure to diverse Chinese media and deepen their understanding of global and regional issues. While students traditionally rely on Lianhe Zaobao for news, this limits their engagement with other reputable Chinese media outlets or official translations of global reports. Additionally, there is a gap in students’ awareness of ASEAN-related developments, which are crucial given Singapore’s regional context. By incorporating non-Zaobao articles and ASEAN-focused content, the program encourages students to explore varied perspectives, enhance their language skills, and develop a more comprehensive understanding of both local and global current affairs.
2. How had it been experimented and enacted?
Every week, the student news broadcasters select articles from Lianhe Zaobao to read aloud during the morning assembly for the entire school. This year, a new addition has been introduced: teachers now select one news article per term from sources other than Lianhe Zaobao, with another article specifically focusing on ASEAN-related topics. The goal is to expose students to a broader range of significant Chinese media outlets or official Chinese translations of news from other sources, encouraging them to explore diverse perspectives and enhance their understanding of current affairs beyond the familiar.
3. Which group(s) had benefited?
Students (Selected Groups), Students (Entire Cohort)
4. What was the positive impact?
Students are exposed to a wider range of Chinese media, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse viewpoints and reporting styles. The inclusion of ASEAN-focused news helps students develop greater awareness of Singapore’s role within the region and understand regional developments. Engaging with varied Chinese media strengthens students’ vocabulary and comprehension of formal written Chinese. The initiative bridges global and local narratives, enriching students’ cultural and civic knowledge.
5. What is a future need that this IdEas@work could meet?
Consider sending the full news articles to all students after the morning assembly and creating channels for students to share their thoughts and ideas about the news.
