Comments from evaluation panel:
Significant cost savings in terms of doing the Data analysis and visualisation in-house. Outreach was to the whole school.

#NYGHoutrunsCOVID
(Virtual Workout Challenge)
In-charge:
NYGH PE Dept
Date of Challenge: 3rd Aug to
30th Aug 2020
Objectives:
1.
To encourage healthy and active living among staff and students
2.
To build a sense of belonging within the class, level, CCA, by
trying to reach a target
3.
To achieve a sense of unity by getting the entire school to embark
on a common goal
4.
To weave the theme of national identity within the event as the
school celebrates along the theme of “Together, A Stronger Singapore”, through
building a resilient and healthy nation especially in the presence of COVID-19.
Brief
description of the challenge:
In order
to celebrate along the theme of “Together, A Stronger Singapore” (2020 NDP
theme), the PE department aims to create a virtual challenge that will encourage
students and staff to put work out into their lifestyle. The message of
building a resilient and healthy nation, especially in the presence of COVID-19.
At the
school level, the target will to surpass the number of covid cases. We have
also set a baseline target at 50,000km and divide out by the 4 levels and
staff. Every level will be given a target distance to cover, based on the
students’ age (eg. upper secondary will get 25% of the total distance, while
the lower sec will get 20%). The format of the competition will be:
· Inter-Level
(Special mention)
· Inter-Class
(avg distance / student) (Top class per level)
· Inter-CCA
(Top CCA in each category)
· Top 10 individuals
per level
· All staff
and students who can achieve a baseline-target
· Top 5
Staff
With a
dip-stick after school resumes, the PE dept realises many of our students were
involved in home-based physical activities. In order to encourage students with
diverse interests and motivations, the department will allow indoor workout to
be counted as well. However, the workout will be rolled out by the teachers on
a weekly basis.
Staff
will be involved in the challenge too as they will share a percentage (eg. 10%)
of the total target distance to be covered as a school. Involvement of parents
will be an advantage for the students to get extra distance if they can show
that they have involved their parents during their runs or workouts.
Fringe
Activities:
In order
to motivate the students and staff to complete the distance, some of the
activities organised in the month of August to motivate them are as follow:
·
Tying in with National Day workout where every student will work
towards accumulating as many kilometres/steps as possible through running
around the school (lower secondary) or indoor workout (upper secondary).
·
The distance they have accumulated will also be donated to #SGOutrunsCovid, which will aim at
donating 50 pairs of shoes to the frontline workers for every 10,000km achieved.
·
Instagramable Moments like best photo taken with family
post-workout, drawing NYGH with running GPS app etc.
·
Just Dance sign-up on Friday whitespace (done by student
councillors, with collaboration from PE dept)
·
NYGH Amazing Race (done by 2020 PE SIA students)
Operational Considerations &
Processes:
In order to save on getting
vendors to work on the data capturing and analytics behind the challenge, the
department worked with the EAS staff from ICT (Mr Steve Teo and Miss Ong Poh
Choo), under the guidance of Mr Goh Han Pin and Dr Liu Shiueh Ling, to come up
with a comprehensive system of data management, that has enough capacity to
cater to 1800 staff and students. As it is a first-time project, there were
many technical glitches and there were resolved with the close collaboration
between the two department staff.
#NYoC Results:
The result was 35,304km of
distance being covered by the school staff and students in just 4 weeks. The
department ran a post-event survey with the students and some encouraging
results were collected.
- 47.6% agree that they are exercising
more often with their parents.
- 86% agree that they are more
motivated to exercise during #NYoC
- 49.1% agree that they enjoy the
class bonding derive from the event
