Ensure that canteen at NYGH:
●
Meets the
dining needs and expectations of staff and students in terms of variety,
quality and fair pricing
●
Serves
healthy fare in compliance with Healthy Meals in Schools Programme (HMSP)
●
Is well
maintained and
All stallholders
●
comply fully
with hygiene practices
●
are equipped to
respond to emergencies
●
try to go
‘green’
●
work in
harmony
|
Implementation Process
|
●
Regular
meetings with all stallholders (at least once per term) for 2-way
conversations and bonding
●
Celebration
of Chinese New Year – lo-hei with all
stallholders (Feb)
● Ensure all stallholders complete advance
module of healthy meals preparation (June - July)
● Regular checks and feedback on compliance with
HMSP and pricing by committee members
● Provision for stallholders to revise menu each
term with approval process
● Training for stallholders on use of fire
extinguishers (11 Jan); all
stallholders upkeep their individual first aid boxes
● Japanese stallholder contributed to
installation of security cameras in common storeroom and kitchen entrance –
an example of community self-help
● When the Malay stall pulled out in Feb 2018,
besides relying on the halal sandwich machine and the halal snacks sold by
the Drinks and Snacks (D&S) stall, we also coordinated daily orders for
Muslim staff and the D&S stallholder brought in daily halal staples (Feb
to Oct)
● Food Hygiene Officers – Kim Ting and Rosalind
conduct weekly
checks on food preparation practices and area cleanliness and work with
stallholders to improve
● Coordination of stall operations during school
holidays and marking days to ensure good and fair spread, allowing for
opt-outs by 3 stalls – Cheryl
● Replacement of 20-year old soiled and rusty
fans in kitchen, by replacing with the ones removed from Level 4 Gym due to
safety concerns.
● Major flushing out of food waste and grease in
all kitchen floor traps (Oct) with payment shared out by stallholders.
●
Fruit and
Drink stall stopped providing straws after advice. All stalls do not use stryofoam boxes. [Stallholders have the greatest challenge
in reducing use of takeaway boxes – most times acceding to customer requests]
|
Extent of Improvement/
Targets met
|
All stallholders passed the unannounced
inspections by HMP and attained the Healthy Meals in School
Certificates. As a result, the school
is one of the few schools that attained HMSP.
Stakeholders’ satisfaction with variety and
quality of canteen food – gathered through student dialogues, staff feedback
and feedback from visitors – external examiners, parents, workshop
participants and medical and dental teams.
All stalls are graded ‘A’ by NEA.
|
Areas that still need to be worked on
|
Strains in relationship between stallholders
are often caused by unwitting staff actions eg mass orders for whole level
during class breakfast/life skills camp from just one particular stall or
ordering from a stall that is not supposed to be operating during holiday
period. The Canteen Committee will persevere to work with stakeholders in
this.
Continue with education of stallholders and
school on the need to cut back on use of disposables.
