A Hoffman apparatus is used to demonstrate the decomposition of water. It collects oxygen at the anode (positive terminal) and hydrogen at the cathode (negative terminal) when current is applied.
Platinum electrode consist of a small piece of platinum foil soldered to copper wire inside the glass tubing. When the glass tubing broke, the platinum electrode becomes unusable.
The Platinum is expensive and still can be used. The broken platinum is soldered to copper wire and rehoused in a pvc tubing. Pvc tubing is used to prevent future breakage hot glue is to seal and protect the copper wire from corrosion. The pvc tubing cost $2 per meter and hot gun tube cost 90 cents of 4pcs. A pair of platinum electrodes cost $68. 3 pairs will cost $204. Savings for 5 years will be $1020.
