  1. Strengthen the leadership perspectives of Student Leaders from the stories of women in leadership who have uplifted others.

  2. Foster good relations with other schools by creating a platform for interactions and discussions among student leaders.

  3. Inspire Student Leaders to reflect on their current leadership experiences and the change they want to enact in the future.

  4. Enrich the leadership journey of Student Leaders through interactions with leaders from various spheres of influence.

Implementation Process

  • Inspired by our founding fathers who established the school to promote female education, the Nanyang Student Council aims to create a platform for Student Leaders from various local and international schools to nurture, encourage and strengthen women leadership.

  • Nanyang Student Council rolled out our first edition of a 3-day Women’s Leadership Conference (WLC) from 15 November 2021 (Monday) to 17 November 2021 (Wednesday). The name of this year’s conference is Empowering Agents of Change: The Women’s Leadership Conference 2021, with the theme of Rising by Lifting Others.

  • The participants will hear from women leaders from different industries where they will learn about the challenges they face, how they have harnessed their strengths to achieve their dreams and how they have made a difference to their community as an agent of change. There will be opportunities for the participants to interact and engage in conversations with each other to gain knowledge and perspectives which they can apply to their personal leadership journey.

  • We have invited Dr Paulin Straughan, Professor of Sociology at Singapore Management University, to be our Opening Keynote Speaker.

  • We have also invited Ms Siti Noor Mastura, recipient of The Straits Times Singaporean of the Year award, founder of Back2Basics and Co-Founder of the Interfaith Youth Circle, to be our Closing Keynote Speaker.

  • All groups have to do a 5-min presentation on the 3rd day of the conference on the challenges faced by women in leadership, the importance of women in leadership/ how they have empowered others, and the solutions to uplift women and overcome challenge. The presentation must center on the industry of the case study that the group was assigned to. In addition, the content of the presentation should also be integrated with the 5 practices of exemplary leadership.

Extent of Improvement/

Targets met

  • The scale of the event has increased.

    • Previously, Nanyang Student Council (NYSC) organized Council Exchange on a yearly basis, which provided an informal platform for student leaders from different schools in Singapore to exchange not only their leadership beliefs, but also best practices from their school.

    • This year, we have reformed the event and organized Nanyang’s first edition of the Women’s Leadership Conference.

    • This is indeed an important milestone for Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) and NYSC.

    • We hope to make this conference into a yearly signature event for NYGH and NYSC.

    • Council Exchange only invites a few local schools to attend. WLC 2021 saw around 140 participants from 3 international schools, namely Camberwell Girls Grammar School from Australia, Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School and Assumption College from Philippines, and 11 local schools, namely Hwa Chong Institution, Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ Secondary School, Crescent Girls’ School, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls’ School, Jurong Secondary School, Methodist Girls’ School, Victoria School, NUS High School of Math And Science, and Nanyang Girls’ High School.

    • In addition, WLC 2021 also saw more than 50 student leaders working tirelessly behind the scenes as Organizing Team and Facilitators to make the event a success.

All targets met:

  • Strengthen the leadership perspectives of Student Leaders from the stories of women in leadership who have uplifted others; Inspire Student Leaders to reflect on their current leadership experiences and the change they want to enact in the future.

    • Through group discussions on the 5 practices of exemplary leadership, case studies, individual reflections using reflection template, working towards the 5-min presentation on the 3rd day of the conference, this aim would have been met.

  • Foster good relations with other schools by creating a platform for interactions and discussions among student leaders.

    • The groups have a good mix of male and female students from international and local schools, independent and mainstream schools. With a fixed group of students throughout the conference working towards a common goal of a 5-min presentation, this aim would have been met.

  • Enrich the leadership journey of Student Leaders through interactions with leaders from various spheres of influence.

    • With Dr Paulin Straughan and Ms Siti Noor Mastura as the keynote speakers and 10 carefully curated case studies on women leaders from various spheres of influence, this aim would have been met.
