SOP for Open Classrooms

Present Situation:
In 2018, we started to build the culture of Open Classrooms, i.e. to have a teacher to send an open invitation to other teachers in school to observe his/her lesson. The intent is to promote sharing and discussion among teachers anchored in the students' learning and pedagogical practices. In 2018, we have started by getting the Key Personnels (HODs, SHs) and Senior Teachers to open up their classrooms. Throughout the year, there have been a number of Open Classroom invitation sent out to all staff. There are feedback from some teachers that the information that was mentioned in the invitation sometimes are too generic (e.g. by just mentioning the date, time and topic). We acknowledge that teachers' may have various need and naturally they would prefer to observe lesson that help in their own development. For example, if I need idea on how to use SLS to facilitate classroom discussion, I would want to visit a lesson where the teacher is using SLS, so that we can learn from peer on how it is done. This focused area will also promote deeper exchange between the teacher observed and the observer when they discuss the lessons. As the format and requirement of such details were not available at the moment, we want to look into it.

Improvements:
In 2019, the PD team would like to set SOPs for Open Classroom to ensure the above details are captured and the learning (both for the observers and the teacher observed) take place. We proposed the following SOPs (to be refined and shared with the teachers at the beginning of 2019). Teachers who are conducting an Open Classroom are to send out an email invitation and stating the following: Date, time and venue of the lesson The number of students in class The topic of the lesson, objective and brief description of what the lesson is about The range of pedagogies used (e.g. collaborative learning, using ICT etc) Any request of specific areas that they would like the observers to focus on Teachers who are observing the lessons should do the following: Replying to the email invitation to indicate that he/she is attending After lesson, to share with the teacher: learning points, comments/feedback.
