Chiding/scolding students in the presence of guests

Image
Contributed by: ANGELINE SEET SIEW PENG, DELINE VICTORIA LEW HUEY LAN Present Situation: During level assembly or morning assembly, we have invited speakers or guests from overseas and our students are chided/reprimanded for being tardy in arriving for the session or for some other incident. This is embarrassing for the students and does not reflect well on the school as it seems to illustrate a lack of personal respect. Improvements: (1) Remind students to always be on time for level assembly. (2) If there is a guest speaker or guests around, refrain from chiding/reprimanding the students. Allow the programme to run. Either keep the students back AFTER the guest has left or deal with the situation the next opportune time.

Clapping after being chided/reminded

Image
Contributed by ANGELINE SEET SIEW PENG, DELINE VICTORIA LEW HUEY LAN Present Situation: When the students are chided or reminded for failing to adhere to something they have to, they clap. Improvements: The speaker should remind the students that they are being chided and that clapping is for encouragement or a happy event.

Template for testimonial information and Sec 4 PCTD

Image
Contributed by TAN LU HOON @ IRENE TAN Present Situation: Students fill in a testimonial template that focuses on leadership and achievements. It may cause students to get the impression that they are of value only if they are leaders and win awards. Teachers writing the testimonials will not get a holistic picture for writing the testimonial. Furthermore, preparing for the PCTD is presented as a different task from preparing the information for the testimonials - when in fact there can be much synergy in combining the two tasks. Improvements: I prepared a new template and presented it to the Year Head. This new template allows students to highlight their strengths in many areas, and is packaged as a preparation for PCTD as well. It incorporates a section for schoolmates and parents (during PCTD) to add on to the information. The PCTD is then a session for students to "pitch" their strengths to parents and the FT. Parents and FTs can add to the points during PCTD. I sho

Information posters for Open House

Image
Contributed by SAW PEI LIN Present Situation: In the past Open House, I had only created Activities and Performances schedule on TV message display. Most of the time, visitors will miss the information on the TV message since it loops over from slide to slide. While the programme card is a good guide, but it is a combination of workshops, performances and showcases, and there is no schedules indicated in the programme card besides school talks. Improvements: This year, I had added another poster for Showcases and their location with Map indication. With 4 separate posters with detailed location and schedule: School Talk, Activities, Performances and Showcases, visitors will have a clearer idea on planning their visit to NYGH Open House. Moreover, I had printed the posters for each registration counter so students will better guide the visitors with the posters.

Sabbaticals for Sec 3

Image
Contributed by YAO LING YUN Present Situation: With the mid-year examinations removed, more curriculum time (about 3 weeks) has been created for Sec 1s and 3s. Improvements: Every level has a hallmark programme and the secondary three students' GCP (mainly a MT programme) is only at the end of the year. My suggestion is to consider bringing back sabbaticals, which have been very well received by the students in previous years, for the Sec 3s. This can complement the holistic development for students, allowing them to try new things in a safe environment. The aesthetics department ran an arts programme for Sec 3 students for one year, perhaps some parts of that programme can be curated for a week's long sabbatical week.

QR code

Image
Contributed by TAN KAH KEOW, TAN YIN PHENG CHERYL Present Situation: Printed collaterals are sent to primary six students to inform them about school Open House. Improvements: To include QR code in the printed collaterals. By including a QR code in the printed materials, it creates an easy way to get up-to-date information. Interested P6 students simply scan the QR code to access the latest news about OH. The same QR code could also be pasted on strategic locations during OH day for attendees to look for the relevant info.

Student dental checkup

Image
Contributed by TAN KAH KEOW, GOH SOON HUI JOANNA Present Situation: School Health Service issues hardcopy notice/reminder for parents to give online consent for their ward's dental checkup in school. The hardcopy is distributed to parents through respective classes. Improvements: A scanned copy was emailed directly to parents, with FT kept in the loop. It saves time and addresses gaps like students misplacing form or parents claimed that they did not received the form. It is also environmental friendly.

Time table

Image
Contributed by TAN KAH KEOW Present Situation: In the past, hardcopy time-table was printed and filed in GO for staff reference. Improvements: With changes to time-table, it is more convenient for staff to refer to the e-copy shared by Time-tabling team for the most updated time-table. GO no longer print hardcopy time-table. It is also environmental friendly to reduce printing.

Use of Google Classroom for CCE-related Information

Image
Contributed by WONG WAN LING, TYE SECK MOY, LOH WEI SHI PAMELA Present Situation: Previously, all CCE lesson plans and materials were uploaded to the shared folder (project) and sometimes sent via email to the Form Teachers. Improvements: This year, the CCE Committee decided to use Google Classroom as a platform to share all CCE-related information with teachers. The objective is to ensure that the teachers can access information and materials quickly without having to trawl through their email inboxes to look for the information. Examples of information shared include CCE lesson materials, updates on Class Contact Time and guidance modules matters.

Our Home: Nanyang Boarding Video

Image
Contributed by SERENE SNG MIN TZE, TAN PUAY SANG, TJONDRO BEATRICE BERNADETTE Present Situation: Enquiries (local and overseas) often require a tour to get a feel of the boarding environment before confirming their stay. A video is a good option before their arrival. Improvements: Tapped on Alumna's skills with drones to create a video of the boarding school premises and facilities as her gratitude to Boarding School.  NYBS Video

SOP for WA

Image
Contributed by LIM MEI HONG Present Situation: WA(Weighted Assessments) are carried out like short tests and quizzes as in previous years. The WA arrangements are up to the subject teachers. Improvements: In view of the WA being higher stake, once a term and of higher weightage compared quizzes etc in previous years, and SOP should be set in place to ensure parity in how the WA is conducted. The SOP could be an instruction sheet to be read out to students etc. Some things to include could be separate tables, no correction tape, no materials within reach, remind teachers to invigilate actively.
